narrow (adj.)

A term used in the classification of types of PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION. A ‘narrow’ transcription is more detailed than a ‘broad’ transcription. (2) A term used in the description of types of VOWEL, referring to a vowel which is articulated with less PHARYNX width than another with the same TONGUE and lip configuration; it is opposed to WIDE.
