22. CURE: This is a mixed bag in InSAfE, as in SAfE generally. Cure and pure have [jɔ:]; sure has [ɔ:] ; poor and tour have [ʊə​] ; while plural and jury have [u:].

 

23. happY: This class takes a half-lengthened /i/ i.e. [i'].

 

24. lettER: The norm for final schwa in InSAfE is /ε/, a half-open to open vowel. It is subject to style-shifting, with middle-class speakers producing [ə] in formal styles.

 

25. horsES: The usual vowel here is [ə].

 

26. commA: Words spelt with final ɑ - sofa, zebra, comma – typically take a half-lengthened //, i.e. [ɑ:]. Bailey notes a minimal pair mynahminer having [ɑ:] and [ε] respectively in InSAfE.

 

28. About: The usual vowel here is /æ/ ranging from [ε] to [a]. Schwa occurs in non-vernacular contexts. Schwa is absent in some words like tomato and connect. The first vowel in tomato is [Λ] for older speakers. ([tΛ'ma:tou]); and [Λ] or [ɒ] for younger speakers. For connect the first vowel is generally unreduced [kɒ'nekt].
