SYNTHESISED SPEECH
Speech-like acoustic waves which have been artificially constructed by computer. The use of computer equipment enables an experimenter to construct a series of acoustic forms which cover the continuum from (say) a central version of [ba] to a central version of [pa]. These can then be played to subjects in order to determine at what point on the continuum their perception shifts categorically from one interpretation to the other. Synthesised speech also enables researchers to manipulate different acoustic cues in order to identify which ones are the most important in assisting listeners to identify consonantal phonemes.
