SPEECH MODE1
A distinctive type of listening engaged in when the stimulus is human speech or resembles human speech, rather than (say) music. There is evidence that listeners maintain a sharp dichotomy between sounds that are processed as speech and those that are not, so that we cannot hear natural speech in terms of its acoustic characteristics (buzzes, hisses etc.).
Switching into speech mode is highly automatic and not under the listener’s control. It is triggered by the acoustic properties of the signal, regardless of whether the listener is expecting to hear speech or not. However, if natural speech is manipulated to extract some of its features (e.g. voicing cues and harmonic structure), neutral listeners perceive it as electronic sounds, while those who have been briefed to expect a ‘strange’ piece of language perceive it as speech. Once the latter have engaged in the speech mode, it is difficult for them to reverse it.
The existence of this speech mode is sometimes cited as evidence that language is special and distinct from other cognitive operations (see modularity1).
