SHADOWING
An experimental method (Marslen-Wilson, 1973) in which subjects are asked to repeat what a speaker says as soon as possible after hearing it. It has been shown that listeners are able to repeat back what they hear at a latency (response delay) of as little as 200 to 250 milliseconds, or approximately the length of a syllable in English. The finding demonstrates that processing takes place on line (while the signal is being received) rather than being suspended until the end of a clause or sentence. What is more, subjects spontaneously correct errors of grammar or pronunciation in what they hear, suggesting that they often recognise the words in question before they are actually complete.
Even shorter (close shadowing) latencies have sometimes been reported, but these should be treated with some caution, as findings are often based on shadowing relatively slow read-aloud speech rather than natural speech.
