LEXICAL RECOGNITION
The point at which a one-to-one match is achieved between a word encountered in speech or writing and a word in the mind. Models of lexical access such as Cohort Theory assume that spoken words are processed by the listener on-line. A number of possible matches are activated on the basis of early evidence (perhaps the first syllable of a word) and the set is gradually reduced as more and more of the word is heard. Finally, a uniqueness point is reached when only one candidate matches the information in the input. However, the concept of a uniqueness point assumes that the listener identifies each phoneme in the signal with a high degree of accuracy. It has therefore been suggested that a recognition point may occur a short while after the point at which a unique match is possible. This would allow the listener to interpret the signal probabilistically if an exact match was not achieved.
