LEFT-TO-RIGHT PROCESSING
The parsing of a grammatical structure on a word-by-word basis. One of the insights provided by Chomsky is that languages are hierarchical, consisting of phrases embedded within phrases. Chomsky criticises the limitations of a finite-state (or linear) grammar, suggesting that syntax cannot be adequately analysed word by word because to do so is to overlook the dependencies which underlie it. This poses problems for accounts of psychological processing, since it is clear from eye movement data that readers do indeed process texts linearly. The case is even clearer with listeners who have been shown to process constituents of the speech signal on-line– about 200 milliseconds behind the speaker. There is thus a tension between the hierarchical syntactic pattern that is ultimately extracted from the signal, and the linear means by which it is assembled.
