GARDEN PATH SENTENCES
Sentences which temporarily mislead the reader or listener when they are being processed on-line (word by word). The initial part of the sentence is ambiguous and permits of at least two possible endings. One of them is strongly indicated by semantic probability: The lawyer questioned . . . (the witness is more likely than by the police confessed); or by syntactic frequency: The old man... (retired is more likely than the boats).
Interest lies in establishing:
Whether readers are strongly biased towards the more predictable outcome (raising the question of whether, during processing, they carry multiple possible interpretations of a sentence or prefer a single one).
The impact upon the reader of encountering an unpredictable resolution.
Whetherlisteners use phonetic and prosodic cues to anticipate the correct syntactic structure before the disambiguation point.
