FUZZY BOUNDARY
The absence of a sharp demarcation between one lexical concept and another. Originally, the term was applied to family resemblance concepts such as GAME, where items within the class have different characterising traits, and no two bear exactly the same characteristics. It was later found that even a simple concept such as CUP has a fuzzy boundary in that there is no clear ‘cut-off’ point at which observers unanimously agree that the shape of a vessel is not that of a cup but that of a bowl or vase. Fuzzy boundaries are also affected by visual context; thus an object whose shape is between a cup and a bowl is more likely to be described as a bowl when it contains potato than when it contains coffee.
