EMBEDDED PROCESSES MODEL
A model of working memory (Cowan, 1999: 62–6) which treats it as an integral part of long-term memory (LTM). It envisages a vast LTM containing permanently stored information, of which a small part may, at any given moment, be activated. Within this area, a smaller part forms the current focus of attention. Stored information needs to be activated before it can be focused on.
In this model, activation is limited by time, and decays after a short period. The ability to focus attention on part of the activated material is limited by capacity: there are restrictions on how much information can be focused on at any one time.
