linguist (n.)
The normal term for a student or practitioner of the subject of LINGUISTICS. Linguistician is often cited for this purpose, but it is never used by professional linguists about themselves. Ironically, confusion sometimes arises from the earlier, and still current, sense of someone proficient in several languages.
