counter-example (n.)
LINGUISTICS and PHONETICS use this term in its general sense, referring to the process of constructing or encountering a piece of DATA which falsifies a hypothesis, and thus leads to revision in an analysis. As in other sciences, there is frequent discussion of whether a suggested counter-example is real or apparent, i.e. able to be analyzed in such a way that one’s hypothesis can be salvaged.
