According to reports, upon returning from Khaybar to Medina, the Prophet (s) fell asleep with his head resting on Ali’s lap following the afternoon prayer. Being considerate, Ali (a) chose not to disturb the Prophet’s sleep. Before falling asleep, the Prophet (s) was aware that Ali (a) had not yet performed the afternoon prayer. When he woke up, he inquired, “O Ali! Did you offer the prayer?” Ali (a) responded, “No.” The Prophet (s) then prayed and beseeched, saying, “O God! Ali has dedicated his life to obeying You and Your messenger. Bring back the sun for him.” Unexpectedly, the sun, which had already set, miraculously returned to the sky, allowing Ali (a) to perform his prayer. In certain sources of hadith and historical accounts, this event is commonly referred to as radd al shams or the return of the sun.
