Among what I have transmitted from the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal is the following report from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf. He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him and his Household) went out, and I followed him until he entered a grove of palm trees. He prostrated and prolonged his prostration until I became afraid, or feared, that Allah, the Almighty and Glorious, had caused him to die and taken his soul. I approached to look, and he raised his head and said, “What is the matter with you, O Abd al-Rahman?” I mentioned this to him, and he said to me: “Indeed, Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to me: ‘Shall I not give you the good news that Allah, the Almighty and Glorious, says to you: Whoever sends blessings upon you, I shall send blessings upon him; and whoever greets you with peace, I shall greet him with peace.’” So I prostrated before Allah in gratitude.
Among this is also what I have transmitted from the book Al-Yawaqit by Abu Amr al-Zahid. He said: Al-Atafi informed me, through his narrators, from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him), from his purified forefathers (peace be upon them), from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“When the Day of Resurrection comes, a caller will proclaim: ‘Let those whose name is Muhammad rise and enter Paradise, in honor of their namesake, Muhammad (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him and his Household).’
“Consider, then, the honor by which he surpassed the earliest and the latest, as a source of pride, and contemplate his perfection, which reached the heavens; indeed, we hope that beyond that there is an even greater manifestation.
“These are qualities in which he reached the utmost degree, beyond which humanity was incapable of going. He attained the highest level in them, and whoever rejects them has disbelieved. He climbed in acquiring their perfections to a summit that surpassed the sun and the moon, and he preceded the earliest and the latest to the peaks of honor, where he commanded and forbade.
“Allah, Glorified and Exalted, Himself testified to his attainment of these perfections in what He included in the verses and chapters of the Qur’an. If someone wished to compile an extensive book on each one of these qualities, he could do so because of the beautiful virtues that Allah gathered in him and the distinguished qualities with which He uniquely favored him.”
