how to respect ahlul-bayt (pbut)

Respect, what does it mean to be respectful? When us as Shia’s say that we highly respect the Ahlul-Bayt (AS) do we truly know what it means?

Respect means to treat others or anything with high regard, with honour. In Islam, respect is one of the foundations of faith, and one of the pillar stones of Akhlaq. With that said, and with knowing that the Ahlul-Bayt are the most regarded individuals after the Prophet (PBUH), how can we as Shias demonstrate our respect towards them.

First of all, who are the Ahlul-Bayt? In order to truly respect someone, one must fully understand who they are, and what they stand for or what they represent. Through the Hadith of Thaqalian, the immense status of the Ahlul-Bayt is revealed. In it, the Prophet (PBUH) addresses his followers saying:

“O' People!  I am about to be called upon [by the Most High] and so I will soon be leaving you.  I will bequeath you two most precious matters.  They are:

The book of Allah, as a cord extended from heaven to earth, and My Itra [family], Ahlul Bayt. Allah, the Benevolent and the All-Knowing has informed me that these two will be inseparable (from each other) till they reach me at the Pool of Blessings in Heaven.  See then, O' people, how well you are to deal with them after I depart [from this world].”

Ahlul Bayt were known to be the acme in integrity, honesty, sincerity and earnestness.  They had immaculate character all the way through, and the Prophet (PBUH) knew that.

This Hadith from the Prophet (PBUH) questioned the manner people would treat the Quran and Ahlul-Bayt in future generations.  Would they hold to their guidance and recommendations, or would they instead mistreat them?  The Hadith urges people to hold to the Quran and Ahlul Bayt, and appeals to the people to love Ahlul-Bayt and emulate them. It wonders about whether people would be devoted to them or instead overlook them, or even be indifferent to their guidance and teachings.

The Ahlul Bayt are those who have been sent down by Allah, pure and free from all sin. They are guardians of Islam and guides sent by Allah to mankind, to assist us on staying on the right path. They should be respected as a gift from Allah, and because of the sacrifices they made in order for message and teachings of Allah to reach us.

So the question is how do we respect these highly regarded individuals?

After learning about the Ahlul-Bayt we can now come to ways on respecting them. The first and most vital way is through acknowledging that they see and witness our every move, and knowing that we should act accordingly. In our daily lives we have to always remember to act in a way where the Ahlul-Bayt are pleased with our behavior.

We respect them by performing our prayers on time, respecting our parents and elders, through giving charity, we respect them by doing as they wish.
