Use your brain so you do not lose it

This saying is absolutely true: Use it or lose it.

The brain is affected by aging, as it shrinks in size—by as much as 6%.
Forgetfulness is one of the most prominent issues that appears with aging. In most cases, the main cause is a reduced blood flow to the brain due to some degree of arterial hardening (atherosclerosis).

However, studies have found that people who use their brains frequently through mental activities—such as solving puzzles, playing chess, learning new things like languages, or simply reading—tend to have better memory than those who don’t engage in such mental exercises.

You can think of your brain as a muscle that needs to be trained. Just as muscles grow and strengthen with physical exercise, the brain remains strong and sharp through regular mental stimulation or challenges.

In an interesting experiment, mice were divided into two groups. The first group was kept in a cage where their activity was limited to eating and sleeping. The second group was placed in a maze—a series of winding paths they had to navigate to get out—which provided mental stimulation. After several weeks, researchers examined the mice's brain cells and found that those exposed to mental stimulation showed increased size and length of dendrites (nerve branches), as well as more synapses (connections between brain cells), compared to the unstimulated group.

In 2005, researchers at Ohio University announced that elderly individuals who engage in intellectual and mental activities enjoy better cognitive function—such as concentration, memory, and learning—compared to those who don’t pursue such activities. Examples include project design, puzzle solving, or doing crossword puzzles.

In another study, it was found that subjecting the brain to mental exercises reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers discovered that the likelihood of getting the disease was four times higher in mentally inactive individuals compared to those who keep their minds engaged.
