Cardiac Muscle-Purkinje Fibers
Apart from the labor musculature, the myocardium also contains specific muscle fibers for the excitation and conduction of excitatory states; among these are the cells of the atrioventricular system, the Purkinje f ibers. They stand out because they are usually much thicker than the fibers of the labor musculature. These specific myocytes have significantly more sarcoplasm and fewer fibrils. They are also rich in glycogen. The sparse myofibrils of Purkinje fibers are pre dominantly locate d close to the cell surface. This figure (bovine heart) shows numerous sub endocardial Purkinje f ibers (cardiac conducting cells) with loose connective tissue (here stained green) between them.
