Predominantly ‘raised’ to [e] (as also Wood 1987: 122; Hastings 1979, quoted in Wood 1987: 111), but with some tendency for lowering towards [ε]. Wood (1987: 123) also notes a tendency for [ə(:)] in certain contexts, e.g. yes. As with SAfE, realizations are affected by following /l/ (= [l5]), typically towards [æ ~ ε] (e.g. self [sælf], often also with iotacisation).
