Language shift and language death

Diglossia can be a stable, long-term arrangement, but in some cases social or economic change may affect the balance between the H and L varieties, causing one to ‘leak’ into the functions formerly reserved for the other and thereby set in motion a longer-term language shift. A good example is the Austrian border town of Oberwart (Felsőőr in Hungarian), studied by Susan Gal.
