diffusion (n.)
A term used in SOCIOLINGUISTICS and HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS for the increased use of a LANGUAGE or linguistic FORM throughout an area over a period of time. Specifically, the theory of lexical diffusion explains the way a sound change moves through the vocabulary of a language, emphasizing that it spreads differentially and gradually through the words to which it applies, and not in an ‘across-the-board’ manner at a uniform rate. Some speakers introduce a change into their speech before others; some use it more frequently and consistently than others; and some words are affected before others.
