amplitude (n.)

A term derived from the study of the physics of sound, and used in ACOUSTIC PHONETICS, referring to the extent to which an air particle moves to and fro around its rest point in a sound wave. The greater the amplitude, the greater the INTENSITY of a sound, and (along with other factors, such as FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCY and DURATION) the greater the sensation of LOUDNESS.
