amelioration (n.)

In HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, a term used in the classification of types of SEMANTIC change, referring to the loss of an earlier SENSE of disapproval in a LEXICAL item; opposed to DETERIORATION. An example of the way words ameliorate is mischievous, which has lost its strong sense of ‘disastrous’ and now means the milder ‘playfully annoying’.
