SPEAKING RATE
The speed (usually measured in syllables per second) at which a speaker speaks, with pauses and hesitations included. Distinguished from articulation rate, the rate when pauses have been discounted. Speaking rate often correlates quite closely with the amount of pausing. So what appears to the listener to be faster speech may not in fact be articulated faster but may simply have fewer and shorter pauses.
Speaking rate varies considerably between speakers and within the speech of a single speaker. A normal rate for English is probably around 200 words a minute, or 5 to 5.5 syllables a second, but a great deal depends upon the type of speech event.
