The benefits of strawberries extend to more than just their delicious taste, as they are also packed with antioxidants like vitamin C, as well as essential nutrients like fiber and folic acid.
In a report published by Health, experts advise to be careful to include strawberry fruit in the diet, for the following reasons:
1. Antioxidants
Antioxidants are molecules found in the body and found in plant foods that fight oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress occurs when there are more free radicals in the body but fewer antioxidants to remove them.
By reducing oxidative stress and tissue damage, antioxidants help reduce the risk of chronic disease over time. Strawberries contain many antioxidants, including anthocyanins and vitamin C.
2. Boosting the immune system
Just one cup of strawberries provides 100% of the body's daily requirement for vitamin C, which supports the cells of the immune system. Research indicates that vitamin C promotes the reproduction of both T cells and B cells, which are white blood cells that help fight off disease-causing invaders, including viruses, bacteria, and even cancers.
3. Improve heart health
A scientific study reported an inverse relationship between anthocyanin consumption and the risk of heart attack among young and middle-aged women. The results revealed that women who ate more than three servings of berries per week had a significantly lower risk of heart attack compared to women who ate the least amount of fruit.
4. Cancer prevention
The high content of antioxidants in strawberries helps reduce the risk of cancer. While the exact mechanisms are still unclear, researchers suggest that the strawberry fruit's natural antioxidants can reduce inflammation caused by cancer and prevent the spread of cancer cells in the body.
5. DNA synthesis
Strawberries are a good source of folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, which is essential for key reactions in the human body, including the synthesis of DNA and the breakdown of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Vitamin B9 is also important for healthy neural tube development during early pregnancy, so it is one of the most important nutrients in prenatal vitamins.
Just one cup of strawberries provides nearly 10% of your daily folic acid needs
6. Natural sugars
Strawberries contain a relatively low percentage of the natural sugar fructose compared to other fruits. For example, while 1 cup of grapes can contain 23 grams of natural sugar, 1 cup of strawberries provides about 7 grams of natural sugar. So, if a person is looking to lower their sugar intake due to a medical condition such as insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or type 2 diabetes, low-sugar fruits like strawberries can be a useful option.
