Can we be happy in our lives?
Is happiness just a mirage, or is it within reach everywhere?
Is it outside of ourselves, or is it stored within us?
Do we need, in order to obtain happiness, to stimulate our desires, respond to our desires, and satisfy our needs, or does happiness have another source, completely different from that?
And the answer: Everything is related to your view of life, your way of life, and the steps you follow in your daily affairs. Happiness is not just a fantasy, and at the same time it is also not easy to obtain.
It does not come when we want it to, it is not a matter of achievement, but it comes as a result of some things. Whoever follows the path of misery, and at the same time searches for happiness, achieving it is impossible for him.
As for the one who walks on a path shaded by happiness, he will inevitably enjoy happiness. Perhaps it is correct to say that happiness (a moral state) and whoever seeks to obtain it through mere material things is looking for water in a mirage.
Some spend thousands to fulfill some of their desires, so they take, for example, a long trip for a picnic, thinking that this will lead to happiness, but when they return home, they find themselves tired, having spent money time and not returning home with anything. Whereas, if one of us spends some money to alleviate the need of a needy person, or spends some time to fulfill the needs of his brother, then he may feel happiness that extends with him to the end of life. Some people think that those who have millions live happily, but this is not the case, for sure, how many wealthy people committed suicide because of their feeling of absolute misery?
How many poor people lived happily ever after?
One of the wealthy says in his memoirs: “I used to think that happiness lies in having money, but when I got the money, I found that it was the money that owned me, and it was not me who owned it. Instead of money serving me, I became its servant, and I was deprived of the pleasure of enjoying the sweetness of sleeping at night, as I was deprived of meeting my children and my family. The nightmare of worrying about loss surrounded me everywhere.
And when I was comparing myself to some of the workers who work for me, I used to find them happier than me immediately. I asked one of them one day: Is he happy?
He said: Praise be to Allah, why not?
I said: Aren't you worried about something?
He said: I have nothing to worry about.
But I was able to regain some happiness when I did not find work on the weekends, so I had to stay at home, and I ate breakfast in the morning with my wife and children, as usual... so I felt an overwhelming pleasure.
To be with your loved ones, away from the anxiety of searching for more money and multiplying in the wreckage of life, cannot be bought with all the money and possessions of the world.
And it was that I decided to distribute my wealth to the one I love, and when I did that, I felt an indescribable joy, and I am still fluttering in the arms of that joy.
And you too: try, even once, seeking to meet the needs of others and solve their problems without wanting to get anything in return, to find how you will have a strange feeling of joy, as if you owned the world and what is in it. And to find that you have gained the affection and love of others, and to find also that your side extended one hand to them, while dozens of hands extended to you. All this is in addition to that you earn the pleasure of Allah's approval.
Hence, if I were asked about a recipe for possessing happiness, I would say: It is commitment to virtues and virtuous morals, working to spread them among people, extending a helping hand to others, and earning the approval of Allah.
