Smooth Muscle - Jejunum

Smooth muscle tissue consists of spindle-shaped cells, which are about 5–20 0 μm long and 3–10 μm thick . Their nuclei reside in the centers of the cells. Short, compact muscle cells of ten have an undulating surface. Light microscopy and the usual staining procedures do not bring out any particular structures in the cytoplasm or the embedded myofibrils.  Smooth muscle cells converge to bundles of different sizes. Among other tissues, they build the muscular coat of hollow organs. This figure shows the inner ring layer 1 and the outer longitudinal layer 2 of the jejunal muscular coat. At the upper edge of the image, the submucous coat has been captured.  Between the two layers of muscle cells are the ganglion cells of the myenteric plexus 3 ( Auerbach plexus). There is an abundance of blood vessels 5 and loose connective tissue in the outer longitudinal layer of muscle cells 1 . They are covered by the tunica serosa (peritoneal epithelium)  4 .
