The meaning of -ify derivatives
Since there are only 23 derivatives in the neologism corpus, I have listed them in their entirety in (1) (stress patterns are indicated as usual by grave and acute accents):
The meanings which verbs in -ify can express appear to be identical to the ones denoted by -ize. I therefore propose the same LCS for -ify derivatives in (2), with appropriate examples given in (3):
Inchoatives are rarely attested, but seem to be possible cf. e.g. mucify, or petrify (the latter is not a neologism). The list in (2) reveals that there are no examples of the performative and similative interpretations. The comparatively small number of derivatives makes it impossible to definitely say whether the performative and similative meanings are systematic gaps, but this question is of limited interest anyway since, as was argued on -ize, these two interpretations are special cases of the ornative meaning.
Given the rather flexible LCS in (2), the small number of neologisms in -ify is perhaps unexpected. However, we will see that this is largely the result of phonological factors.
