Current controversies

It should be clear from the examples reviewed above that LP is in urgent need of constraint; or put slightly differently, that we need to look again at the constraints available in LP to strengthen them and maximize their application. This re-examination will be one aim, in which I shall consider, and state my position on a number of current controversies in the theory. These are the distinction of lexical from postlexical rules; the interaction of morphology and phonology; stratification within the lexicon; the formulation and interrelations of the major constraints of LP; and the associated matter of underspecification.
