electroglottograph (n.) (EGG)

An instrument used in ARTICULATORY PHONETICS for registering the vibratory movements of the VOCAL FOLDS; also called a glottograph. (Electro)glottography measures changes in electrical resistance across the neck, using a pair of electrodes placed on the skin on either side of the neck just above the thyroid cartilage. (Electro)glottographic data is printed out on an (electro)glottogram. The same process is also referred to as (electro)laryngography, the difference between the terms reflecting different interpretations of the relative roles of the GLOTTIS and LARYNX being measured by the instrument. (Electro)laryngographic data is printed out on an (electro)laryngogram. In all cases, the shorter versions are the standard usage.
