The FACE vowel

The FACE vowel is very variable in English, ranging through diphthongs (mostly rising towards [i] or [e] from open vowels like [æ] or [a]) to monophthongs in the [e] region. Again, this diversity partly reflects the history of the vowel. In Figure 5.12, diphthongs are marked with an arrow; the dot marks the start of a diphthong and the arrow-head marks the end.
