One of the most familiar and striking results of refraction and dispersion in nature is seen in the rainbow. Whenever rain is falling and the sun is shining upon it, from a point not too high in the heavens, an observer standing with his back to the sun will see one and sometimes two of these brilliant bows.
The inner or primary bow is composed of the spectrum colors in their order, the red being on the outside and the violet on the inside. The outer or secondary bow is composed of the same colors, but in inverse order.
