The scale given in § fig 1 is the major scale formed upon the major triad or major chord. This chord consists of any three tones, the numbers of whose vibrations per second are in the proportion of 4, 5, 6. There are three major chords, as follows

The names of the first tones of these chords will suggest the origin of the name of the Tonic sol fa system of musical notation. It will also be observed that these three major chords include all the tones of the major scale.
