Actinide Ions
The actinides are similar to the rare earths in having the 5 f electrons partially shielded by 6s and 6p electrons. Most of the actinide elements are radioactive, and only uranium in CaF2 has been successfully used in a laser. The host was doped with 0.05% uranium. Laser action occurred at 2.6μm between a metastable level and a terminal level some 515 cm−1 above the ground state.
