Grignard reagents convert esters into tertiary alcohols
The addition of Grignard reagents converts esters to 3o alcohols. In effect the Grignard reagent adds twice. The initial steps of the mechanism involve a nucleophilic acyl substitution to form a ketone, which then reacts with the second mole of the Grignard reagent.
