Following the passing of Abu Ṭalib (a), the persecution of the Prophet (s) and the Muslims by the Quraysh escalated, rendering Mecca an increasingly unsafe place for them. Therefore, the Prophet (s) began reaching out to Arabian tribes in the vicinity of Mecca, spreading the message of Islam and seeking supporters and believers in his Prophethood. His aim was to gather support from these tribes to counter the pressures imposed by the Quraysh. During the Prophet’s journeys to Taif, Ali (a) remained by his side. They presented the teachings of Islam to the tribes near Mecca, including Rabia, Banu Shayban, and Banu Amir.
During the Prophet’s visit to the Banu Amir tribe to invite them to Islam, a member of the tribe raised a question, saying, “If we pledge our allegiance to you [by embracing Islam] and Allah grants you victory over your enemies, will the position [of vicegerent] be ours?” The Prophet (s) replied, “The position will be up to Allah, and He will place it where He wants to.” Consequently, the tribe declined to accept Islam and offer their support to the Prophet (s).
