The Alps are threatened to lose 80% of their ice by 2060

According to the assurances of scientists, it is currently possible to see with the naked eye the changes taking place in the ice cover of the Alps in Italy.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, based on data from the environmental branch of Greenpeace Italy, and the scientists of the Italian Glaciology Committee (CGI), 80 percent of the ice in the Italian Alps may disappear by 2060, which will lead to new droughts.

Experts have completed the first expedition to the glacier of the Forni Valley in the Stelvoe National Park. And it became clear to them that “it loses more than 50 percent of its thickness as a result of melting compared to 2022, and it may completely disappear by 2060. During the days of August 21-24 alone, this ice lost 37 cm of its thickness, and this is higher than the previous daily average, which is 6 cm in today".

According to the scientists, these variables are visible to the naked eye: since the mid-19th century, the Forney ice has lost about 10 square kilometers, or half its area, and the ice front has retreated 400 meters in less than 10 years.

A source at the Italian Glaciology Commission says: “Forecasts based on our climate scenarios indicate that by 2060, up to 80 percent of the ice area in the Italian Alps will disappear, which will have a significant impact on the volume of meltwater. This means that without this ice, in 30-40 years we will face increasingly severe droughts in this valley."

The second expedition is scheduled to start at the end of August to the Meag Glacier in the Aosta Valley.
