How can learners be helped?

Colored filters

Colored filters, like those used with the Irlen Method, actually change the spectral content of the light, perhaps even reducing troublesome wavelengths of light. If this is achieved, then the colors that are causing the distortions are reduced, enabling the brain to more effectively process information. The colored filters do appear to stabilize the printed page, helping the learner to read and process the information more efficiently. Some surveys of colored filters have proved very positive with 82 to 93 per cent of users reporting that reading, handwriting, spelling, eye strain, school performance and self-image had improved (Irlen and Robinson, 1996).

Learners with SSS often do not realize that letters should be still and clear and so it is only when educators ask appropriate questions about what it is like when they try to read that probable reasons for some of their learning difficulties can be identified.

Discussion

Do you think you have any learners who may be experiencing SSS? If so, who will you need to speak to about this and what steps could you, with the other educators in your team, immediately take to enhance the learning of the pupil with SSS?
