The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) traveled to Syria on a trading journey on behalf of Khadijah when he was twenty-five years old, accompanied by her servant, Maysarah. Khadijah was a woman of noble status and wealth who employed men to conduct her business and trade.
When Abu Talib learned that Khadijah was preparing her merchandise to send to Syria with the caravan, he said to the Prophet: “My nephew, I am a man without wealth, and times have become difficult for us. I have heard that Khadijah has hired so-and-so for two young camels. We would not be satisfied with her giving you what she has given him. Would you like me to speak to her?”
He replied, “As you wish.”
Abu Talib then said to Khadijah: “Would you consider hiring Muhammad? We have heard that you hired so-and-so for two young camels, and we would not be satisfied with Muhammad receiving less than four young camels.”
She replied: “If you had asked this of someone distant and disliked, I would have agreed. So how could I refuse when you have asked it for someone beloved and close?”
Abu Talib then said to the Prophet: “This is a provision that Allah has brought to you.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) departed with Maysarah after his uncles instructed Maysarah to take good care of him. They sold their merchandise and made several times the profit they had usually made. When they returned, Khadijah was greatly pleased by this. She developed affection for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and began considering marrying him.
Khadijah had previously been married to two men from Banu Makhzum, both of whom had passed away. Several prominent men of Quraysh had proposed to her, but she had rejected them. She spoke about the matter to her sister—or, according to another account, to a close friend named Nafisa bint Munyah.
Nafisa went to the Prophet and asked him: “What prevents you from getting married?”
He replied: “I do not have the means to marry.”
She said: “What if this were taken care of for you, and you were invited to marry a woman of beauty, wealth, noble status, and suitable lineage? Would you accept?”
He asked: “Who is she?”
She replied: “Khadijah.”
He said: “How could that be possible?”
She replied: “Leave that to me.”
He accepted, and he proposed to her through her uncle—or, according to another account, through her father. He attended the marriage ceremony with his uncles, and her uncle married her to him because her father had already died. Another account states that her father himself arranged the marriage. The Prophet gave her a dowry of twenty young camels.
He then moved into her home. This took place two months and several days after his return from Syria. Khadijah was forty years old at the time.
She was a wise, strong, noble, and dignified woman. She believed in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) from the very beginning of his mission and supported him with her wealth in conveying his message. She eased the pain he experienced because of his people’s opposition and strengthened his conviction through the proofs of his prophethood when they first appeared. She also strengthened his determination to continue with the mission with which he had been sent.
It has been narrated that Islam was established through the wealth of Khadijah and the sword of Ali ibn Abi Talib. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) held Khadijah in an exceptionally high position during her lifetime and after her death—a position he did not grant to any of his other wives.
