Following the initiation of the Prophet’s public mission, which encountered ignorance from polytheists and opposition from the Quraysh, ʿAlī (a) steadfastly accompanied and supported the Prophet (s). A few years later, from seven to ten years after the start of the Prophetic mission (biʿtha), which corresponds to 617-20, ʿAlī (a) remained by the side of the Prophet (s) in Shiʿb Abī Ṭālib (the Valley of Abū Ṭālib). On certain occasions, ʿAlī (a) clandestinely entered the city, procured food, and discreetly transported it into the valley. Moreover, within the valley and as per his father’s instructions, he maintained a vigilant watch over Muḥammad (s), ensuring his safety and guarding against any potential harm. While everyone else was asleep, when the Prophet (s) settled into his designated spot, Abū Ṭālib (a) discreetly changed the location for Muḥammad (s). He then requested his son ʿAlī (a) to take the Prophet’s place. One night, ʿAlī (a) confided in his father, saying, “O father! Tonight, I [may] be killed.” In response, Abū Ṭālib (a) expressed his thoughts through a poem, conveying the following message: “My son, embrace patience, for it is virtuous. I have placed you in a challenging trial on the path of a remarkable individual.” In response, ʿAlī (a) composed a poem expressing his sentiments. The poem conveyed the following message: “Do you urge me to be patient in defending Muḥammad? By Allah, I did not speak out of fear. I wanted you to witness my support for Muḥammad and understand that I still comply with your instruction. I strive to assist the Prophet in every situation, solely for the sake of Allah.”
