A Child Returning to School After a Long Break

There is a difference between a child attending school for the first time and a child returning to school after a long vacation.

A child who is going to school for the first time is generally no longer considered a major concern for most families, especially since many mothers now work outside the home and enroll their children in daycare or nursery at an early age. As a result, children are no longer isolated; they become accustomed from an early age to leaving home and interacting with people other than their parents. Therefore, starting school usually poses little difficulty because they are psychologically prepared for the experience.

The real problem arises from incorrect parenting practices in some families. Some parents isolate their children from society, while others raise them with either excessive strictness or excessive pampering. Both extremes can produce a withdrawn child who is overly dependent on his or her mother. When it is time to start school, this can become a major challenge. The child's first month at school may be particularly difficult, as the child refuses to attend, dislikes school, and struggles to adapt to classmates, almost as though experiencing a second weaning.

In such cases, mothers should prepare their children well before the school year begins by speaking positively about school and helping them develop enthusiasm for it. It is also helpful to take the child to visit the school before classes start so that he or she can become familiar with the teachers. This is especially important if the child is an only child or the eldest sibling. However, if older brothers or sisters already attend school, the transition is generally easier because the younger child tends to imitate them and comes to see school as a normal and necessary part of life.

Mothers should also be careful not to pass their own anxieties on to their children. A mother who is separating from her child for the first time may naturally worry about the child's well-being. If she communicates this fear, it can cause the child to develop a strong aversion to school.

As for children returning to school after a period of relaxation without fixed schedules for sleeping and waking, they usually need only a short period to readjust to the school routine, and this rarely presents a serious problem.

Another issue that arises at the beginning of the school year is the school bag. It has become something of a "ticking time bomb" on children's backs because of the physical strain it places on them. Heavy school bags can contribute to skeletal deformities and musculoskeletal problems at an early age. Studies conducted among schoolchildren in an American state found that between 20% and 35% of students suffered bone-related injuries due to carrying excessively heavy books and because schools failed to establish proper class schedules before the school year began. Greater oversight is needed to ensure that this issue is properly addressed, as its long-term consequences for future generations could be serious.

Mothers are also encouraged to support their children's participation in school trips. These activities help children expand beyond their limited home environment, develop broader experiences, and become more comfortable interacting with society. If your child is shy or introverted, encourage participation in school activities and excursions, as these experiences can help build confidence and social skills.

Nutrition experts also stress the importance of never skipping a child's breakfast. A healthy breakfast—such as a glass of milk and a cheese sandwich—before leaving for school helps improve concentration, provides energy, and promotes alertness throughout the school day. Likewise, parents should not forget to prepare a nutritious snack for school, as it serves as an important meal during the child's recess.
