In the year 618 years before the Hijra, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) married Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). At that time, his noble age was twenty-five years. As for Khadijah, she was the daughter of Khuwaylid ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza ibn Qusayy ibn Kilab.
She was first married to Atiq ibn A'id al-Makhzumi, and she bore him a son named Jariyah. She then married Abu Halah ibn Mundhir al-Asadi, and she bore him a son named Hind ibn Abi Halah. When he died, she became the owner of great wealth and engaged in trade with it until she became one of the wealthy women of Quraysh. It is said that she would send out eighty thousand camels for trade.
On the roof of her house there was a dome made of green silk, secured with ropes of silk. The story of her marriage to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) is well known, and recounting it in detail is beyond the scope of this brief account. However, we will suffice with one narration.
Al-Kulayni and others narrated that:
“When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his household) wished to marry Khadijah, daughter of Khuwaylid, Abu Talib came with his family and a group of Quraysh and entered upon Waraqah ibn Nawfal, Khadijah's uncle. Abu Talib began speaking and said:
‘Praise be to the Lord of this House, Who made us descendants of Abraham and the offspring of Ishmael, settled us in a secure sanctuary, made us rulers over the people, and blessed for us the land in which we live.
Now, this nephew of mine—meaning the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his household)—is such that no man among Quraysh can be weighed against him without him being found superior. No man can be compared with him without the latter being considered inferior to him. There is no equal to him among creation. Although he has little wealth, wealth is but a passing provision and a fleeting shadow.
He has a desire for Khadijah, and she has a desire for him. We have come to you to ask for her hand in marriage to him, with her consent and approval. The dowry is upon me from my own wealth, both what is to be paid immediately and what is to be deferred. By the Lord of this House, he possesses a great share of honor, an established religion, and sound judgment.’
Then Abu Talib fell silent. Her uncle began to speak, but he faltered and was unable to respond adequately to Abu Talib. He became overcome with hesitation and exhaustion. He was a man among the Christian priests.
Then Khadijah spoke first, saying:
‘O my uncle, although you have greater authority than I do regarding the witnesses, you do not have greater authority over me than I have over myself. O Muhammad, I have married myself to you, and the dowry is upon me from my own wealth. So, tell your uncle to slaughter a camel and prepare a wedding feast, and then enter upon your family.’
Abu Talib said:
‘Bear witness that she has accepted Muhammad and that she has undertaken to provide the dowry from her own wealth.’
Some of Quraysh said, ‘How astonishing! Is the dowry to be paid by women to men?’
Abu Talib became extremely angry and stood to his feet. He was a man whom other men feared and whose anger they dreaded. He said:
‘When men are like my nephew, they are sought after with the highest prices and the greatest dowries. But when they are like you, they are married only with expensive dowries.’
Abu Talib then slaughtered a camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his household) entered upon his family.”
When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his household) reached the age of thirty-five, Quraysh demolished the Kaaba and rebuilt it. They increased its length and width and raised its walls.
