Experts warn of laughter that may lead to death

Various researches have highlighted the wonderful health benefits of laughter, which include improving the immune system, alleviating anxiety, and even increasing women's fertility.

But, as with many things in life, it turns out that despite the many benefits of laughter, in reality, there have been several horrific cases reported of people laughing themselves to death.

Experts believe there is likely a limit to how good laughter is for us.

Professor Robin E. said: Werner of the University of Birmingham told the New York Times: “Laughter is great for us, but large amounts of it are bad, perhaps.”

Here are the ways in which laughter can be fatal, in rare cases:

1. Rupture of an aneurysm in the brain

According to doctors, laughing too hard can cause aneurysms in the brain to burst.

A brain aneurysm occurs when there is a bulge in a weak blood vessel, according to the NHS. It usually only causes noticeable symptoms if it bursts.

As Dr. James Hamblin, a US public health expert, noted in a 2011 Splitsider article: “If you're walking around with a brain aneurysm, one laugh can cause the aneurysm to rupture.”

2. Asthma attack

Extreme emotional states such as intense laughter or intense crying can trigger an asthma attack, because your body's response to different emotions changes the way you breathe, according to the UK lung and asthma charity.

The association added: “When you feel emotional, you may start taking rapid, deep breaths. This is called hyperventilation, and it can make the airways narrow, causing asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness.”

In a 2009 study, researchers surveyed 105 patients with asthma and found that more than 40% of them suffered from laughter-induced asthma.

In severe cases, asthma attacks can be fatal if a person cannot access their inhaler.

3. Laughter epilepsy

In rare cases, laughter, especially the uncontrollable kind, can be a sign of an underlying condition called laughter epilepsy.

Most people do not feel happy or well-being during laughing epilepsy. The opposite may happen, as they may feel afraid or out of control.

According to the Epilepsy Action website, the most common cause of laughter epilepsy is a small tumor in the hypothalamus.

4. Choking

In some cases, intense laughter can interfere with breathing, which means you don't get enough oxygen while laughing.

But the likelihood that these causes will lead to death is small, according to Dr. Megan Kamath, a cardiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, United States.

She said in an interview with “Live Science”: “Although deaths caused by laughter due to suffocation or cardiac arrest have been reported, it remains an unlikely cause of death in healthy individuals.”
