Obesity, which has now become a non-communicable epidemic, is one of the causes of the development of many chronic diseases of social importance with a high risk of premature death.
Dr. Oksana Mikhaleva, a Russian endocrinologist and nutrition expert, points out that obesity is particularly linked to some types of cancer.
She says: “Obesity causes catastrophic changes in health. As a rule, it is combined under the name “metabolic syndrome.” People who suffer from excessive obesity develop high blood pressure and increased cholesterol, which leads to the accumulation of plaques that cause atherosclerosis. "Glucose absorption by cells is impaired, which subsequently leads to type 2 diabetes."
In addition, obesity stimulates the development of some types of cancer: liver, gynecological, breast and intestinal cancer. Excess fat also accumulates in the internal organs: the pancreas, liver, bile sac, kidneys, and against this background, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, the formation of stones in the bile sac and decreased kidney function can develop. Obesity also greatly affects the body's musculoskeletal system and causes joint erosion.
According to her, obesity also leads to reproductive problems: menstrual irregularity in women and infertility. In men, it leads to erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels.
