Your son craves and seeks your acceptance and love no matter how old he is, and regardless of whether he admits it or not. He wants you to be proud of him; He wants to know he's good enough just the way he is, even when you encourage him to try something new. One of the greatest gifts you can give your son is your confidence in him and his ability to be successful in life.
You can talk to your son as he grows up about the people he likes. Help him understand the importance of character; Teach him to look beyond words, appearances and material success, to look at the value of a life well lived. He has to decide for himself how to live, but he will know that you taught him well.
And think for a moment about the men you knew and respected. You can think of a family member, your favorite teacher, a politician, or any other parent in the neighborhood. Perhaps you admire an actor or an artist. Now, think for a moment about the qualities you respect in this person. What made him succeed? What are the things that you particularly like?
You may discover that there are many ways for a man to be a good man, and success has more than one definition. Successful, complete and respected men are not all the same and your son needs the freedom and support to become the man he is meant to be. This is easy to say, but the difficulty lies in the application, especially if your son's goals and values in life are different from your goals and values.
Every father and mother dreams about his children, but the parents must leave their children in the end to live their own lives. You can let your son know that you trust him even when you don't agree with his choices. Your son will overcome many of the challenges he faces when he knows that you trust him, that you trust the person he has become.
