A disturbing report about the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas!

Scientists have warned that Himalayan glaciers that provide vital water for nearly two billion people are melting faster than ever due to climate change, exposing communities to costly disasters.

Glaciers disappeared 65 percent faster from 2011 to 2020 than in the previous decade, according to a report by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

"As the temperature rises, the ice will melt, that was expected, but what is unexpected and very worrying is the speed. This is happening much faster than we thought," lead author Philippus Wester told AFP.

The report said the glaciers of the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) are a major source of water for about 240 million people in mountain regions, as well as another 1.65 billion people in river valleys.

Based on current emissions trajectories, glaciers could lose up to 80 percent of their current size by the end of the century, said Nepal-based ICIMOD, an intergovernmental organization that also includes member states Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar and Pakistan.

Glaciers feed 10 of the world's most important river systems, including the Ganges, Indus, Yellow, Mekong and Irrawaddy, directly or indirectly providing billions of people with food, energy, clean air and income.

“With two billion people in Asia dependent on the water contained in glaciers and snow here, the consequences of losing this cryosphere (frozen area) are so vast as to be unimaginable,” said Isabella Cozel, Vice President of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development.

The peer-reviewed report said that even if global warming is limited to 1.5 to 2.0 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels agreed in the Paris climate treaty, glaciers are expected to lose a third to half of their size by 2100.

"It underscores the need for urgent climate action and every small increase is going to have huge impacts and we really, really need to act on climate mitigation, that's our call," Wester said.
