Inventing a method for extracting oil from waste and algae
The media office of the Baltic Federal University announced that the university's scientists have created a technology to obtain bio-oil from marine algae and organic waste.
The office indicates that this technology will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the level of organic pollution. It will also allow a reduction in fossil oil consumption.
According to experts, the search for alternative energy sources is based on technology similar to nature - this is an important scientific direction that will help ensure sustainable energy development in the coming decades.
Researchers from the university have proposed using a method to obtain synthetic oil from biomass, based on the natural geological process of oil formation.
Researcher Yulia Kulikova from the University's Institute of Living Systems says: "The source of biomass in the innovative technology is macroalgae, excess silt, sediments of sewage and wood waste. This wet mass is heated to a temperature of 260-300 degrees Celsius in an autoclave reactor, which leads to to high pressure to 3-6 MPa (mega pascal.
According to experts, during this process, the bonds between large organic molecules are broken, which leads to the formation of oil-like substances. Such a process was taking place in the distant past in the ancient oceans and led to the formation of natural oil.
Kulikova says: "The use of this technology will allow the recycling of organic waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the biomass decomposition process, and the bio-oil, which is considered carbon-neutral, will replace part of the fossil oil."
