Global health warns against the use of artificial sugar substitutes

The World Health Organization recommended that those trying to lose weight not use sugar substitutes (artificial sweeteners).

The organization said that a systematic review of the available evidence indicates that the use of artificial sweeteners does not contribute in the long term to reducing body fat in adults or children.

The organization also notes that there may be "potential undesirable effects" from long-term use of sugar substitutes, such as an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“People need to think about other ways to reduce their sugar intake, such as eating foods that contain natural sugars such as fruits, or foods and drinks,” said Francesco Branca, director of the WHO’s Nutrition and Food Safety Authority, in a press release.

Branca added, "Artificial sweeteners do not provide any beneficial nutrients. It is necessary to adopt a balanced diet, low in sugar, for a healthy life."

The organization stated that its recommendation applies to all people except those who already have diabetes.
