Scientists explain the role of the brain in linking fasting and improving health

scientists at the German Max Planck Institute discovered the crucial role of the brain in the relationship between fasting and improved health.

Scientists confirmed that shortly after fasting, the brain activates the production of a corticosteroid hormone, which initiates autophagy in the liver, which in turn destroys defective or damaged molecules that are removed from cells while generating new energy.

The experiment conducted by the researchers included not feeding laboratory mice for four hours during the period when they usually eat a large amount of food, and this is similar to skipping breakfast, as the mice consume 40 percent of their daily calories at breakfast.

The researchers monitored the response of neurons in the hypothalamus to short fasting, and it became clear that the neurons not only send signals that stimulate the body to eat, but also send signals that activate autophagy.

The researchers discovered that blocking signal transmission leads to autophagy not being activated despite feelings of hunger.

The researchers hypothesize that the brain sends an initial signal to rapidly initiate autophagy, and that liver cells activate the recycling system at a later stage.
